BATES, Hal Former journalist, 78, passed away January 14, 2008. Beloved husband of Selma for 41 years, he is also survived by daughter, Jackie; son, Stephen (Christina); stepson, Michael (Janine); and grandchildren, Sara, Luke, and Jade; plus granddog, Shayna. Hal's bio includes U.S. Marines, UCLA, and various entertainment publications such as Hollywood Reporter and National Enquirer. As much as he adored his family, women, and babies, his lifelong passion was classical music, especially opera. We will always remember his warmth, charm, intellect, and humor. A remembrance gathering will take place at a future date. Play Mahler for him for now.

  1. I didn't know about the classical music bug ... does that explain your adolescent affection for Carmina Burana? Or did that come from Mingo?

  2. Hal Bates & Classical Music goes back to prehistory. We grew up with the stuff. One game we always played was trying to guess a composition on the radio when he turned down the sound 2 seconds after a piece started.
